Make It So!  
Ever since I started watching Stargate Atlantis I've realised something: God, I love Science Fiction.

It never occured to me just how much I love that genre until I started watching SGA, the first sci-fi programme in years - and I literally had this "Thank God, finally a new Sci-Fi programme to watch." feeling. Would certainly explain why I always loved seaQuest and Star Trek. And stuff like Star Wars ALTHOUGH I'm not quote sure whether that isn't actually fantasy only in space.

I guess I find it so intriguing because it deals with what one day could be, or what lies out there in the universe, and that's thoughts I've been playing with ever since I was a kid. The thought that some of these things might be possible one day. How our society's going to change, for the good or the bad. How OTHER societies might be like. How not everything we claim is right naturally is. And because there's this component that we're not as special as we think, because there's maybe people far more advanced than we are.

And I love to see different people's visions. May it be utopias like Star Trek, where Earth is pretty much united and the enemy is out there, or dystopias like Firefly. I love the Stargate universe, where there's this gate to other worlds, other planets. And who's to say stuff like that don't actually exist, somewhere? Just because we say it's impossible it doesn't have to be.

Probably that's why I like Sci-Fi more than Fantasy. Fantasy always has this "But it never really WAS like that" touch to it wheras Sci-Fi is more real so to speak because it deals with things that one day might happen. Sci-fi is usually being regarded as something for nerds and geeks while I think, it's mostly for people who like to reflect on their own world...

It's just - fascinating, to quote Mr Spock here. :-)

P.S. And I need to watch Babylon 5

P.P.S: Started Stargate SG-1 a couple of days ago. Am now already on season two. *clears throat* Yeah.

I soak everything Sci-Fi up like a sponge. And I too love to imagine that one day some of these things like Space travel might be real. It gives one hope for mankind.

And stuff like Star Wars ALTHOUGH I'm not quote sure whether that isn't actually fantasy only in space.

Oh I love SW. But it IS one of the hardest things to categorize. It`s a bit of a western in space but with fantasy elements. I guess the best would be modern fairytale since the basic story is very much young hero with magical powers saves princess with the help of scoundrel and wizard, battles against dark wizard etc. Only the setting makes it futuristic.
That said I`d sell my family for a real, functioning lightsaber. *g*

P.S. And I need to watch Babylon 5

You never watched it? Then you definitely should. It was confusing at times but great TV.

What about Farscape? The first two seaons were rocky IMO and it had some of the weirdest episodes/scenes ever but also the bravest. Once I got into it I loved it.

And do you watch BSG, the new show I mean? It`s one of the best shows I`ve seen in the last years.

Yup. Plus it says in the beginning "A LONG TIME AGO in a galaxy far..." so it's set in the past, and thus can't exactly be Sci-Fi, or can it? But I , too, agree it's more a fairytale. And how I love it.

That said I`d sell my family for a real, functioning lightsaber. *g*

Okay, this might sound stupid but I'm always a little suspicious when it comes to new TV shows, or have been at least. Which is why I only recently decided to give SG-1 a chance. (By the way, I didn't expect that show to ...dunno, hurt so much at times. Like that very early episode where we learn about the death of O'Neill's son. Or the episode where Daniel has to relive the death of his parents. Ouch.) Besides I saw Bruce Boxleitner in the previews and I always fancied him in "Agentin mit Herz" as a kid and when I was 14 (or when aired B5?) I just thought "Eeeek! He's grown old!". But my friend's promised me she'll bring me her DVDs in October so :-)

I hadn't heard of Farscape until I saw the DVDs in the shops. What's it about?

And then, I'm not THAT much of a TV geek because I usually forget to switch in the telly regularly. Thus I tend to miss episodes which is why I never saw all episodes of Dark Angel, for example. The only exception being Buffy here but that's because my brother loved it, too, and rembembered to watch it. I'm more the "Let's buy DVDs and watch it when we feel like it" type. So, I LOVE TV shows only I watch them when they're on the telly...kind of :-)

And do you watch BSG, the new show I mean? It`s one of the best shows I`ve seen in the last years.

Nay. Like I said, I mostly don't know what's going on on the telly (Sacrilege! I know :-) ) so I just hear of shows when people write about them on my flist. In which season are they currently? Because a friend told me it's about a war between men and machines? And it really sounds intriguing.

Old trilogy? New one? Personally I love both. The old films are pure nostalgic beauty for me but the new ones moved me as well.
I know a lot of people think TESB is the darkest part but for me it`s Ep III since for the heroes of the new trilogy it`s pretty much over. They can`t have a happy-end and for the galaxy you know things are getting much, much worse. In TESB the galaxy already has hit rock bottom and ìs working its way up. And the good guys can still have their happily ever after.

Like that very early episode where we learn about the death of O'Neill's son.

Oh I take it you hadn`t seen the feature film then? Because that deals with this so I knew it beforehand.

Lee Stetson. *little hearts are flying through the air* *g* Yes, he has grown old in B5 but I loved his character.

I hadn't heard of Farscape until I saw the DVDs in the shops. What's it about?

Oh my, so John Crichton a human astronaut gets sucked through a wormhole and lands on the other side of the galaxy. Due to very unfortunate circumstances he immediately makes enemies with a powerful commander of the Peacekeepers (kind of a military dictatorship). so he is forced to join forces with a wild bunch of fugitives of different races (and they look quite alien while Peacekeepers are human-looking) onboard of a living ship named Moya.
A peacekeeper named Aeryn Sun is forced to join them too and of course John is totally into her ans she just thinks he is nine kinds of weird. *g*

The show deals with them being hunted, Crichton in particular for his wormhole knowledge and him adapting to a life he has no ideas about. He is totally a fish out of the water a first. Nobody understands his little pop-culture references or him at all. And he doesn`t understand them, their cultures, their technology or anything.

At first it might be a bit weird because some of the alien characters are honest to god puppets. But they have as much personality as the living crew-members. And the show really takes a lot of risks in storytelling. There was an ongoing storyline in Season 3 that just ripped my heart out on multiple occassions.

Personally I prefer the old trilogy because it's got more charme and atmosphere. But I like the new films, too, except for the Anakin/Padme scenes because could the dialogue get any worse?

I agree on Episode III being the darkest film of the 6. Because...from the beginning of the film, you just KNOW everyone is doomed there. And you watch Anakin struggle and trying to do the best he can and you just know it's going to end bad. Basically you watch him fail. And yes, you know that the worst is yet to come.

Lucas put too much emphasis on the looks of things and the CGI in the new trilogy instead of the characters. And he can`t write romance if his life depended on it. *shakes head*
Still, I`ve always been intrigued by Vader and I sympathized very heavily with Anakin because you just knew what was going to happen to him. And he was a good person, he just made a couple of very bad decisions.
And as far as the Jedi went, you have a pretty normal, nice 9 year old and after 10 years with the Jedi he becomes a raving lunatic. Hm, wonder how could that be. They made a couple of pretty stupid and arrogant/shortsighted decisions too.

Sadly that's true. He was probably toying around with CGI because that's what he would like to have had in the first trilogy.

There was an episode of SG1 where they found a strange little ship on some planet and tinkered around with it and the whole timeI screamed: "That`s a puddle jumper, you idiots, a puddle jumper." *g*

Yeah. I mean after the first shock was over I did get into it pretty quickly :p

*snorts* I looooove how they continue to banter about some things. Like the whole "naming it issue" it already starts in SG-1 season one and continues in SG:A.

Or, in that alternative reality episode in season one of SG-1 there's this moment when Carter I think says the Stargate can't be opened for longer than 38 minutes. Now, I dunno if that was also in the movie but I found it neat they later based a whole SG:A episode on that information.

I love stuff like that :-)

I laughed my ass off when Sheppard said "And we're not going to name it ENTERPRISE!" - and chooses ORION instead! I mean I don't think they knew that was a German Sci-Fi show but it's still funny as hell :p

OMG! That's - wow. Because it DID seem a bit weird to me that of all possible names he chose Orion after he'd just dismissed Enterprise but it never occured to me they could actually knew the show. Wow, so cool. (Is that the point where I should admit I used to watch Orion and that my father's a huge fan and we got him the book just for Cristmas and I actually squeed when he called it Orion?)

But in general the show is very good with continuity and little shout outs to past episodes.

What surprised me is that they already discover the gate in Antartica halfway through season one and I didn't expect that. So the Spin-Off wasn't at all like "Let's find a new Stargate and instantly do a Spin Off" which I think is pretty awesome.

Orion has its own charme. I mean the frogs do look like hygiena articles for women. *g* And the space dances? Hilarious. But it just has charme and I like it.

It`s like a big puzzle and they`re finding all these little pieces one at a time. Antarctica, the Ancients etc. So kudos to the writers.

They left in the basic story of the old show but revamped things quite a bit. Humans and Cylons (yes machines, that were created by humans) fought a brutal war but then the Cylons just disappeared. Now they came back and in a surprise attack nearly destroyed mankind. A little fleet of survivors is trying to escape them and on the lookout for their lost colony, Earth.

It`s a very character-driven show and so far I`ve seen the first (had only 13 episodes though) and half of the second Season and it was stellar. Season 3 should start in the US soon.

Sounds brilliant. I've heard people complain that it's so dark and not pretty light-hearted but I think I could like that show for that reason. Oy, so much still to watch!

And then I've seen a DVD box of a show called Crusade - did that one actually ever air here?

I don`t think so. It was a short-lived spin-off of Babylon 5.

Well, you remeber the Hell House scene with Jared? Imagine the towel being the size of handkerchief and him not really being able to hold it in place. But the body is just as nice.

Babylon 5 habe ich eine Zeitlang auch sehr gerne geguckt, war imho besser als DS9. Und wenn du Science Fiction so gerne magst, dann lies doch mal Dune... ;p

I grew up with science-fiction and couldn't live without it. At least not for long.^^
I loved the first (two?) seasons of SeaQuest; and Babylon 5 is great either.^^ Commander Ivanova is sooo snarky.

And I'd say Star Wars IS fantasy taking place in space.^^

hach, SG1. lang lang ists her :( Irgendwie hab ich schon von der achten Staffel kaum was gesehen und von der neunten gar nichts (meeeh! will Jack !!!). Da geht man auf eine Stargate-Convention und danach schaut man kein SG mehr. Schon seltsam xD Aber ich werde mir jetzt die 10te Staffel Eps schauen *vorgenommen hat*

Ist aber interessant zu sehen, dass es Leute gibt, die SGA vor SG1 gesehen haben. Ner Freundin hab ich das auch aufgeschwatzt (SGA - wegen McKay :D).

Mir ist das wegen den Sprüchen zwischen McKay und Rodney aufgeschwatzt worden - Gott sei Dank. :-) Einer meiner Lieblinge ist ja immer noch: "I shot him....in the LEG!" *lach*

Ich finds nur schön zu sehen, dass die Chemie zwischen den Charakteren eine generelle Sache des Stargate Universums zu sein scheint - bei SG-1 läuft es ja nicht wesentlich anders ab als bei SG:A, was dumme Sprüche und schöne Momente anbelangt :-)

Ich finde, bei den Stargate Serien sieht man, dass sich auch die Schauspieler untereinander super verstehen. Die haben nämlich alle nur Mist im Kopf^^

Ja, das stimmt einfach. Außerdem - im Vergleich zu Star Trek find ichs schön, dass die Teams wirklich Freunde zu sein scheinen, während bei Star Trek und Konsorten die militärische Rang immer über allem zu stehen scheint...

Ich freu mich so, dass SG jetzt auch mein Fandom ist! :-)

Noch nicht, ich wollte den aber demnächst von amazon.com bestellen. Falls ich nicht vorher mein gesamtes Geld auf SG-1 verschwende :-)
