Make It So!

Ever since I started watching Stargate Atlantis I've realised something: God, I love Science Fiction.

It never occured to me just how much I love that genre until I started watching SGA, the first sci-fi programme in years - and I literally had this "Thank God, finally a new Sci-Fi programme to watch." feeling. Would certainly explain why I always loved seaQuest and Star Trek. And stuff like Star Wars ALTHOUGH I'm not quote sure whether that isn't actually fantasy only in space.

I guess I find it so intriguing because it deals with what one day could be, or what lies out there in the universe, and that's thoughts I've been playing with ever since I was a kid. The thought that some of these things might be possible one day. How our society's going to change, for the good or the bad. How OTHER societies might be like. How not everything we claim is right naturally is. And because there's this component that we're not as special as we think, because there's maybe people far more advanced than we are.

And I love to see different people's visions. May it be utopias like Star Trek, where Earth is pretty much united and the enemy is out there, or dystopias like Firefly. I love the Stargate universe, where there's this gate to other worlds, other planets. And who's to say stuff like that don't actually exist, somewhere? Just because we say it's impossible it doesn't have to be.

Probably that's why I like Sci-Fi more than Fantasy. Fantasy always has this "But it never really WAS like that" touch to it wheras Sci-Fi is more real so to speak because it deals with things that one day might happen. Sci-fi is usually being regarded as something for nerds and geeks while I think, it's mostly for people who like to reflect on their own world...

It's just - fascinating, to quote Mr Spock here. :-)

P.S. And I need to watch Babylon 5

P.P.S: Started Stargate SG-1 a couple of days ago. Am now already on season two. *clears throat* Yeah.

*snorts* I looooove how they continue to banter about some things. Like the whole "naming it issue" it already starts in SG-1 season one and continues in SG:A.

And McKay wanting to name the thing "Gateship" and being shot down, that gets picked upon in SG1 too. I laughed my ass off.

Also it`s very blink and you`ll miss it but the first two minutes of the SG:A pilot you see Atlantis flying away from earth and some Ancient woman staying behind. They were very tongue in cheek with that since the character was introduced in SG:1 already.

I laughed my ass off when Sheppard said "And we're not going to name it ENTERPRISE!" - and chooses ORION instead! I mean I don't think they knew that was a German Sci-Fi show but it's still funny as hell :p

I think it was delibarete since Robert Vogelm the German reporter, visits their set all the time and in one of his reports he talked about how he introduced Peter DeLuise, the director, to Orion. He brought the DVDs I think. So I guess that was a little shout-out. Yay.

Okay I totally didn't notice that, will have to rewatch. How bloody cool is that? Seems like they actually know their universe...^^

Don`t know which Season of SG1 it was though. Maybe 3 or 4?
But in general the show is very good with continuity and little shout outs to past episodes.

OMG! That's - wow. Because it DID seem a bit weird to me that of all possible names he chose Orion after he'd just dismissed Enterprise but it never occured to me they could actually knew the show. Wow, so cool. (Is that the point where I should admit I used to watch Orion and that my father's a huge fan and we got him the book just for Cristmas and I actually squeed when he called it Orion?)

But in general the show is very good with continuity and little shout outs to past episodes.

What surprised me is that they already discover the gate in Antartica halfway through season one and I didn't expect that. So the Spin-Off wasn't at all like "Let's find a new Stargate and instantly do a Spin Off" which I think is pretty awesome.

Orion has its own charme. I mean the frogs do look like hygiena articles for women. *g* And the space dances? Hilarious. But it just has charme and I like it.

It`s like a big puzzle and they`re finding all these little pieces one at a time. Antarctica, the Ancients etc. So kudos to the writers.
