Just your ordinary fandom post.
You know the most heartbreaking thing about the recent Supernatural episode actually is the way Dean tries to hide his fear by being sarcastic and calm, as if not to upset Sam. I mean it's so plain obvious he's scared and not as okay with it as he says he is. And my ass he checked out the hospital because the nurses weren't hot. He didn't want to be left alone. Because that's what all people have done to him before.
Absolute most heartbreaking thing? That he assumed Sam was going to leave town and him behind.
My heart broke into many, many little pieces.
Also, ProSieben bought Supernatural? Well, goodnight then. ProSieben even manages to air Lost with bad ratings. I definitely see SPN being aired somewhere late night in the middle of the week so that no one will notice it. Well done.
Watched 1x06 - Dalek with my brother today. He's growing really fond of Doctor Who. As in the show, not the character :p I dunno why, maybe because I'd just finished watching Supernatural, but by the end of that episode I had tears in my eyes.
Okay, I shall watch one more Dark Angel episode (*happy flail*) and then be off to bed.

I actually was near crying this time :( The angst *sigh* I love them ...

This episode was so heart breaking.

The best bit in the pilot is the "Agent Mulder, Agent Scully" thing :p

rofl. But that's *Lost*'s fault... not Pro7's.
Really, I rather see SPN on Pro7 than on RTL, Sat1 or even RTL2, because they suck even more.
Generally, I think the bad quotes depend on the fact, that unfortunately right now US-shows don't seem to be interesting anymore, neither to the viewers nor to the tv broadcasting companies.
no subject
Well au contraire. Whether we like Lost or not it still doesn't change the fact it's got a huge, huge fanbase in the US and basically everywhere else. And I don't think that Teh Germans are the only ones who don't follow the hype and watch quality TV instead - I mean, just look at the other stuff that airs here. German people watch the greatest crap. So I do believe it's ProSieben's fault.
I really thought that RTL would buy SPN since they also air SV, or maybe VOX.

I think more to the broadcasting companies. US shows are expensive.
no subject
Well, fact is, fan bases don't really count if you look at quotes.
The thing is ratings for US shows have been declining here for *years*. I don't why.. it's just the way it is. People obviously love to watch crappy stuff produced in Germany - so that's what were getting now most of the time. That's why there's rarely US Shows on prime time anymore.. but German TV Shows, reality tv and let's redecorate my crappy room shows.
German people watch the greatest crap. So I do believe it's ProSieben's fault.
The thing is, Lost is a hype in the US. It isn't here. Nobody really cares. I've met more people who watch Desperate Housewives than Lost. The media here isn't really interested in Lost, so nobody is really curious about it. And the 5000 German Lost fans really *don't* count, if you need at 3 Million viewers to make a good show *shrug*
And Pro7 did power Lost endlessly before it started, so you can't say, it's their fault.
no subject
Yes. And everywhere else. So, I dunno, they did power it in the beginning but then the summer hiatus, what was that about? And they were surprised they lost even more viwers after that? I'm denying that more people are watching Desperate Housewives than Lost, but maybe 21:15h Monday's also a crappy ... er ... "Sendeplatz/Sendezeit".
Look, I'm not trying to write a big manifesto on why people should watch Lost. They don't. The only thing that strikes me is how a show that is so popular all over the world fails to get decent ratings here.
no subject
Make that "NOT denying"
no subject
But I doesn't really feel like it's a hype here. I don't see that much media coverage. Do you? Really? Have you met much non-fandom people who talk about show? I don't.
The only thing that strikes me is how a show that is so popular all over the world fails to get decent ratings here.
I really believe it's a cultural thing. I don't why it is this way, but as I said, those quotes have been declining for *years*. It's that way for all US-shows - not just Lost. I don't know where the viewers go, if they really watch the German crap instead or just go surfing the web. (but if I had to guess, I would think it's rather the later, because the competition for our spare time is definitely getting heavier)
[sorry this took so long, I unfortunately have to work again, meaning I have absolutely no time for anything *grrr*]
no subject
No it isn't, agreed. But I think that's also because of ProSieben. Hard to explain really. And I meant it's a hype everywhere else inthe world, or at least it's successful. (And yeah, I know people who watch Lost and are not in fandom :o) )
It's that way for all US-shows - not just Lost.
Is it? I don't watch ratings, generally, but that's interesting. Maybe it'sthe same like with music - it's cool to watch German things. Like it's cool to listen to German music?
no subject
*shrug* I really don't know. The thing with German music is, it seems to come and go... but I don't think it keeps people from listening to the usual stuff (buying is another problem *g*).
German TV... it probably has to do with the fact that the broadcasters here have been pushing there own stuff for a long time, because it's cheaper for them. But that's mostly RTL and SAT1... Pro7 and RTL2 still show lots of US stuff - like they always have been - and still they constantly seem to lose viewers. And I don't think they're doing less commercials. So I guess it rather has to be a social matter or a matter of changing taste in general. I also think lots of people go out and rather buy the DVDs than trying to keep up with TV land.
Just take 24 for example, I've heard from *lots* of people that they couldn't keep up with watching it on tv, so they just got some DVDs...
no subject
True. I did that with Gilmore Girls, at least.
no subject
So, on the one hand it could be reasoned nobody is watching because German viewers are just much more clever than everybody else. *eg*
One could also argue (as it has been) that Germans don't like to watch long storyarcs not being done by soap operas. I still remember the one lonely German TV show with a season long story-arc: "Eine Frau wird gejagt", an actually very, very well done "The Fugitive" rip-off. That was sometime in the early to mid-90s.
Personally? I do believe it's Pro7's fault because they have the crappiest.trailers.ever. They wouldn't know how to do a good trailer if it would bite them in the ass. You can advertise the crap out of the worst show ever if you know how to do good Trailers. Pro7 doesn't.
*hate*

What about Telenovelas?

Yes. That's actually so true. I mean they put Charlie hanging from the tree into their trailer - yay, whole purpose of episode gone.
no subject
Yeah, I watch Verliebt in Berlin, too. My Professor at the University - a Prof. Dr. in Film Studies - watches Big Brother all the time. As did most of my fellow studies in Film Studies the last time I talked to them. Being smart or knowing a bit about Television and Film doesn't mean you don't sometimes like to watch stuff like that.
What about Telenovelas?
The only difference between a Telenovela and a Soap Opera is that Telenovelas have a certain number of episodes and there's a more clearly defined basic storyline for clearly definded characters e.g. "Lisa wants David to love her" (ViB) vs. "School is over, people are living their lives" (GZSZ). The main thing they have in common: You can start watching both kind of shows right in the middle of it in spite of the storyarc because they have a whole lot of mini-storyarcs, too. You always get it.
Try doing that for example with Veronica Mars or Battlestar Galactica or Prison Break. You'll have a hard time understanding it through and through because you are missing lots of backstory.
So... I am thinking that maybe Lost also falls into the "Soap Opera" description, too, because a) it doesn't have a clearly definded number of episodes or maybe even characters and b) basically you could start watching anytime because the story doesn't move forward and the Flashbacks are telling the same story again and again...
I now even get why one of the producers once said they write Lost for "the casual viewer". Wow. *G*
The problem is, the hype (even in Germany) says that this is a very, very complicated show you wouldn't get at all if you haven't started watching from the beginning. Maybe they should work on that. Tell people that, yes, you'll get it even now, you haven't really missed that much.
no subject
I didn't say that. I mean I used to watch Dark Angel and seaQuest. All I wanted to say is that the reason Lost isn't popular here is the viewer's cleverness. Because there is much worse stuff that is successful.

How would you want to do that? Do a trailer that says "Hey we were wrong it's not that complicated at all!"? :o)
no subject
Yeah, because I meet nothing like super-intelligent people whenever I leave the house. lol.
One could also argue (as it has been) that Germans don't like to watch long storyarcs not being done by soap operas.
I don't think you could prove that. There's enough shows with longer arcs that obviously did work.
Personally? I do believe it's Pro7's fault because they have the crappiest.trailers.ever.
rofl. agreed. Even though I still don't think you could manage to stop people watching by crappy trailers only. I still think it's the missing hype, probably combined with the fact that the show really isn't that good in the first place. I guess, like me, people were expecting something different from the show... and the whole idiotic mystery jungle probably isn't what people want to see.
no subject
Exactly. Like at university *rolleyes*
and the whole idiotic mystery jungle probably isn't what people want to see.
Could be. But it'd still mean German viewers realised OMG IT'S BAD! which I just don't believe.
no subject
No, I meant it's a matter of taste and interest. I kinda think it's just not the thing many people want to see right now. (What they want right now is obviously kitchen make-over with IKEA ; )
no subject
Funny, though, because these shows have been around forever as well - at least "Changing Rooms" has. Way long before all the other shows joined in.

ProSieben even manages to air Lost with bad ratings.
Yes, and also, Numb3rs? *cries*
Weeeee for Dark Angel. I'm on 2x21 - for about a week now. Don't dare watching 22 because after that it'll be over (yes, I'm mostly there for the Jensen.). Freaking FOX.
Also, uh, hi! I just discovered your LJ through uh, I don't really rememeber who, but I think
Jensen? DA? Und Dr Who? It's a pleasure to meet you.

Kabel1 bought the Buffy seasons I believe. I was hoping for VOX, too but we're again stuck with ProSieben.
As to Dark Angel, I'm still on episode six or something. I'm taking my time or else I'll get a JEnsen overkill with Smallville Saturdays, SPN Tuesdays and Dark Angel in between :o)
Also, uh, hi! I just discovered your LJ through uh, I don't really rememeber who, but I think moonilicious and the comments there had something to do with it. (Which is kinda funny seen that she's not on your flist) and I, well.
Via moonilicious? O_O How is that possible? *amazed* And yes, Hi there :o)

no subject
Hm, dann hab ichs heute leider verpasst.
