Hey... I've got a question... how do you say in English when someone's trying NOT to cry? In Germany we have this expression 'to repress one's tears'... I was wondering if there's something similiar in English? *needs word for fanfic* :o)

um... i don't know of a single word to say that, but we usually say 'holds back tears' or something... it's easier to know how to say it in the context, though... but if i think of other suggestions, i'll let you know! :D

Hm thing is I used that expression just a sentence before that ... *ponders* ... I wanted to say something along 'The tears that he had been holding back before that now flowed like a river but he did not make an effort anymore to .... keep them back?' Could I say 'Keep them back?'

how does that sound? or even 'stem the tide' or something like that?
