"They cannot appreciate beauty. They cannot create art."
Reading about Summer Glau on [livejournal.com profile] berlinghoff79's journal made me realise that I really, really need to continue watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

T:SCC may not be the greatest show that has ever been, but this bit right here instantly catapulted itself among my favourite moments on television ever.

For those not watching the show: She is a machine, a terminator. He is a soldier from the future who more than anything hates machines, and claims that they're souless creatures.

And then the writers go ahead and do something like this.

Ok, das ist für mich ein Grund, ganz dringend mit der Serie anzufangen - ich habe nur noch keine Ahnung, wann ich Zeit dafür habe.

Yes. It's a standard trope when dealing with non-human humanoids (demons, vampires, robots, and so on) that what sets us apart from them is that we (or at any rate some of us) can appreciate beauty and create art and so on, because we have "souls." It's supposed to make up for them being so much better than us at everything else. And a wise writer shows us that this is simply whistling in the dark, empty bragging to soothe our all too justified fear that we are not as good as we could be. They're better than us at everything else and they can do this too. And too many of us have never tried.

The nonhumans become, then, not an enemy to be defeated by force, but a signpost and a wake-up call to us, to stop sleepwalking through our human lives and be more. Because if they can create art and appreciate beauty, then so can any and all of us. And so we should.

Well said. Your comment here makes me want to print it out and take it to wherever I go, just as a reminder to myself.

Thank you.

Actually, this was my favourite moment of the whole season.
The series really isn't that great, and it gets stuck without moving on rather soon. But it does have its moments. :)

Oh, actually I think the series is among the best shows that are currently on television. I just don't think it is the greatest show that has ever aired ;-)

It was one of the three shows we regularly watched this year, so it must be among the better. It's just that Lost and BSG are way better. :P

T:SCC was nice to watch (and a definite x-hundred percent improvement from the movies) but towards the end of the season I got the feeling that, you know, everything's more or less told. There are a few points for development, but really not that many that I can see more than one more season coming.

Yes. And the scene where Derek takes John to the playground on his birthday.

I almost cried on that one! Really SCC can sometimes be a bit slow but it totally makes up for it with emotionally powerful scenes.

I positively LOVED that theme. But I'm also way behind with this show. :-( I think I'm missing half of the second season

Summer told us that it was her favourite scene(don't remember if overall or just S1). She was allowed to choose her own music and chose Chopin, because he's her favourite composer and because that particular piece is the beauty of humanity/mankind come to life or something like that.

Did I mention I saw Summer?

She pretty much does her ballerina stuff in any show she's in because that's what she was before an actress. Gratuitous ballet dance! But she's so good! It reminds me I should watch it. I bought S1 because it was cheap but I haven't seen any episodes.
