If I Could Write Season 4 (musings on 4.01 and season 4--no spoilers, just thoughts)

There's been a lot of musings about Castiel and his agenda--is he good or evil? Is he really an angel? If so, is he really working for God?

Taking all these things into consideration-here's what I would love to see them do with the character.

If I could write season four, then Castiel would sincerely believe that he's doing God's will when really, he isn't. Or put differently: I would squee like a very squeeful thing if Castiel got the order to pull Dean out of Hell by someone who claims to be God, but who really isn't.

Think about it--in "Sin City," Casey tells Dean that Lucifer is the god of the demons, but that nobody's seen him around in a while. The leader of demons now seems to be Lilith. To keep balance between the "demonic" world and the "angelic" world, Kripke's best move would be to do the same to the Christian God--make him into a myth, have the angels too without a leader. Or, give them a leader who claims to be God and is mostly working in his own interest.

So that way--oh, how glorious would it be if Castiel really believed he was doing the Lord's will, maybe he even eagerly believed that God spoke to him when he got the command to resurrect Dean, and later finds out that he's been fooled. Possibly tricked into doing something that would never have been "God's Will."

No way Kripke will actually go there. But oh, how I'd love it if he would. If not, it's still lorious fanfic potential. *makes notes*

By the way, does anybody know if there's an animated icon somewhere of Castiel revealing his wings?

I love your idea, I think Kripke is treading spectacularly thin ground with the religious aspects, though I do have a lot of respect from him trying something new.

And Kripke doesn't do it? You completely should!

You know, that would be a really brilliant twist. I wish it would happen, because somehow, even I'm having trouble believing that God has a mission for Dean - not that I would hate it if it turned out to be true, but really, why hasn't God shown up before this?

I saw some animated Castiel-Wings icons yesterday, but for the life of me, I can't find them now! Argh!

Exactly my thoughts. *gg*

Though instead that there is someone fooling Castiel I'd rather have that Castiel perfectly well knows that no-one's seen God in ages and he's probably long dead or never existed, but tells Dean otherwise to fool him. (It's harder to refuse an order from god than that from some dubious warrior angel.)

and i think it's straight up God, because Kripke said at comico that sam and dean area ganna become kinda like polar opposites in this season~

I personally hope they don't go that route because that would mean Dean was being tricked instead of finding his life is worth. It's like, look, Sam is special, this is more than proven, but when Dean might be getting some kind of special meaning in the great picture, in the end is just 'look, he was just being played. He is just plain old Dean whose only purpose in life is to save Sammy.

I don't really know Castiel's agenda, so you could be right. Who knows. I know a bit of Lilith and other nome that has been mentioned a lot lately, though, but I won't spoil you and this post. :)

But in that version, Castiel too may have been tricked into something. I was talking more about Castiel, not Dean. (Plus, this is not a theory, just what I'd like to see) I don't think doing God's Will would necessarily help Dean to get a feeling of self-worth, especially if it leads to killing Sam (which I assume it will)

Really, what really bothers me is that many seems to think like Dean, that nothing good can happen to him.

Poor guy is just doomed. It would be better if he stayed where he was, since no matter where he goes and what he does, it's hell.

I thought about something like that too - I must admit, the "God commanded it" line made me somewhat nervous, because I'm not sure how the story could go from that, but let's face it, humans have been saying something like that for a long time, and that doesn't mean that it's exactly true. So I also remembered the conversation in Sin City, and what you're saying would definitely made sense. I'm really rather curious to see where they'll take the story this season after having watched the premiere.

Well, I like your idea but I fear Kripke will go a far more easier way.

My apprehension is more like - where did Dean appear? Close to Sam. Sam who was supposed to lead a demon army out of hell. Who now *you know what* can do.

Castiel may have a list of jobs and somewhere down that list are maybe the names of Lilith and... of Sam. You know, just like old John told Dean, "If you can't save him, you have to..."

I hope that they won't give us that crap in the end.

That would be the one thing I would find really disappointing. Castiel is so creepy because he is a messenger of the Lord and had the power to raise Dean from the dead when no one, not even Sam, could do it. To say it isn't so would cheapen the whole thing.

As long as God doesn't appear as a character and remains and unseen presence instead, I have no problem with his messengers taking an active role. After all, the whole hell thing is based on the Christian version of hell. If they didn't want to go the way of medieval Christian lore, they should have stopped a long time ago.

I wanted to type my own reply, but I agree wholeheartedly with this. It would be more than disappointing if it turned out that someone ELSE than God told Castiel to pull out Dean from Hell.

Plus, I think it'd not make a lot of sense - after all, I'd assume that if you're an Angel, you're, well, pretty tight with God in some way and therefore, you'd notice Him not being, well, Himself. Also, Ruby herself said that no creature she knows of, not the most powerful of all demons, could pull something like that off - so unless it would be Lucifer erm, posing as God, I don't think there's a chance of it NOT being God.

Also, looking back at it now, the Trailer for the Season Premiere gave away a huge clue. It said "[...] GOOD vs. EVIL" and something about it having just begun. So, yes, I really think Kripke IS going there. Heh.

And wow, I don't think I've ever used the word "God" so much in one reply.

Well, not God pulled Dean out of Hell but Castiel. So he's got the power too, whether God commanded him to or not.

I'm not saying there are no angels, so Good vs. Evil would just as well work with angels and demons. I fear that Kripke will go there when he smartest move would be not to. They've been SO vague on whether there is God and Lucifer, and I liked that. To now have "God's Will" in there...it's awkward. And it throws off the balance.

Well, for three seasons they have always been VERY vague about Lucifer and God--do they exist? Don't they? To now go and throw God's name in there as an definite character is really awkward, I think.

I think Castiel could be just as creepy assuming he's doing God's will when he really isn't.
