Well, she said, I'm back.
OMG back from RingCon. Dead, tired, exhausted but willing to type up as much as possible now while everything's fresh in my memory. Might post more photos tomorrow, today it's only three because my camera's a bitch and makes pictures so dark I have to photoshop everything to make it look halfway decent.
Okay, here we go.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH
Left our hometown around noon because Steffi had to watch the latest Supernatural episode first *cough* Arrived in Fulda round... half past three I think? Anyway, checked into our hotel, then received a call from
cologne_chick asking us where we were and informing us that people were already lining up to have their photos taken with Sean Astin. Since we couldn't afford that anyway we rested for a couple of minutes before we walked to the Esperanto Hotel where the convention was held. Just as we arrived (and after I'd met up with
cologne_chick and she told us she'd already met Sean because she's a member of his fanclub) the video contest started in the Main Hall, so we searched for our seats and watched.
There were some really great videos. Someone had made a short video about Beren and Luthien which was lovely, and I especially liked the parody of the Argonath titled "A Day In The Life Of The Argonath" which included scenes from the movie matching their conversation. What I did not like were those videos where people tried to play Eowyn or Arwen or Aragorn, it just felt wrong. *shrug*
After that the Opening Ceremony followed, and then it was already time for Sean Astin's panel. One word about Sean Astin: he reminded me of my grandmother. If she tells stories or answers questions she always, always begins even before the beginning and adds little bits and pieces to it that don't actually belong to the story/answer she intends to give. In other words, it takes her ages to get to the point, and same goes for Sean. He's quite the chatterbox. On the one hand I really liked that. It was nice to see him ramble on and trying to give good answers. On the other hand, I sometimes found myself wondering "Okay, I think I lost track...". Anyway, I really don't remember all the questions he was asked but the one that stuck in mind was when one girl asked him whether he could describe Frodo's and Sam's relationship and he replied: "In one word? 'True'." I found myself going all "Aaw!" and so did the rest of the crowd. He then told us that Samwise is actually based on the batman who, at war, had to make sure the leader was alright, and that his clothes were neat and that he was nurished so the other soldiers would respect him. I loved that bit of information and have already started writing a song about it.
Next up were Mark Ferguson and Craig Parker. Okay, what else to say besides we laughed our arses off? For one of their games they needed the help of Jed Brophy and Shane Rangi, and when they told them they were on a quest for Lederhosen Shane didn't know what Lederhosen were - so they made him believe it was a small animal. They also played this game where they improvised an argument scene between a couple and had spread pieces of paper across the stage with lines on them which they would include to their play. For example Craig (aka Barbara) was telling Mark (aka Derek) how he loved his cat "Tiddles" more than Mark and how he one night said to his cat: *picks up paper, reads and laughs* "Kiss me or I'll die!" :-p
After that there was some music and party, but Martin and I decided to call it a night and went back to the hotel.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH
We got up at half past seven, showered, dressed and had breakfast before we stumbled off to see Bruce Hopkins' panel. I'd urged my brother to go and watch this one because Bruce is a lunatic :-p He actually threw himself before Miranda's feet at the Opening Ceremony. Anyway, so Bruce... yes, what did he do? He improvised. Made the crowd do crazy things, like doing impressions of guitar strumming while he was singing to it. He'd also brought some music he thought was "Contemporary Middle-earth" which included Led Zeppelin and had me going "WOOOOOT!" :-) He also said that he shared great respect for musicians and painters and artists in general.
Sarah McLeod's and Lori Dungey's panel was fun. They got on stage and declared they wanted to hobbitise everyone. So they got three girls on stage - finding three willing men was harder. In the end, Sarah walked off the stage into the crowd and picked them by herself - unfortunately also a girl who'd just dressed up as a male elf :-p Sarah and Lori taught them to dance like a hobbit, and then they got two other girls on stage and served them hobbit food. Aaaw! Meanwhile they were answering questions, and some girl asked them what they particularly liked about Germany and Lori said "Gummibears!" She also said that we were all so helpful but that we tend to try to be very precise when giving directions etc. which is very true :-) Since nobody else was asking questions I got up to the microphone and asked what their favourite movies were, and Sarah replied she loved Proof and Lori said she liked Crash...and another film everybody but me had heard of. Hm. I really liked Sarah. She was just so... cuddleworthy :-)
After that people with ticket number up to 600 were gettng their autographs so there were no events in the Main Hall, and Martin and I didn't really fancy any of the lectures. So we waited. And waited some more. And some more. Until finally we decided to do some more waiting but this time in the line for the photo session with Miranda Otto. Where we waited another 2 1/2 hours. Whee. Now, the photo for me was a complete waste of money. I KNEW I'd look horrible next to that beautiful, stunning woman and of course I did. No really. I look- *shudders* But oh, my brother. He adores Miranda. And when he got up to her he said very nervously "I'm so nervous and you're so pretty, it's not fair!" which made her laugh. (And HIS photo turned out lovely). When he got back, he was shaking all over - bless him :-) I remember when I met Billy, I was basically the same .-)
We went to the Main Hall for the Costume Contest which was fun - and touching. Three girls, who'd dressed up as the two trees and the spider (sorry, forgotten their names), performed the Darkening Of Valinor - accompanied by music and lyrics being read out which was just - amazing. It really had me in tears. They also won the jury's overall favourite award - well deserved.
Then it was time for Miranda Otto's panel:

I thought she was lovely. I heard people complain that she was arrogant but I didn't think so at all. Maybe it's just that she was a bit...well, reserved maybe? But she was very nice, very polite, and smiled a lot. My brother put it perfectly: "She's just a real lady, you know?" I think as soon as actors don't goof around on stage like Craig or Mark they're automatically labelled as being grumpy or arrogant. Which to me is ridiculous - she's a well respected actress and maybe she just has to be more careful with what she does and says.
Anyway, I got up to the microphone again since no one was standing in line there and I just came back from taking pictures ( :-) ) so I asked whether she enjoyed singing the Old English song at Theodred's funeral or whether she had to be forced :-) She said that she did have fun. Apparently Peter Jackson had originally planned to do a kind of voice-over thing. Music with Eowyn reading out the lyrics. But then he changed it because he wanted more rhythmn, so in the end he changed it to the chant. Whee :-)
Someone asked her about the dresses and she replied she would have loved to keep them - but got to keep her sword instead. Which was when the crowd started cheering :-p
When Miranda's panel was finished Martin and I didn't wait for the RingStars but went back to the motel again. We were just so tired :-)
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH
We got up at 6:30 because we still had to pack our stuff and check out of the hotel - which explains why I'm so tired now - and arrived at the Con round nine I think. Again, there was nothing else for us to do but wait - though we did spend lots of time trying to find pictures we could get the actors' signature on. Then we lined up for the autograph session. That and getting through the session took us the whole morning until noon. :-)
The funny thing is that for the autographs I'd picked one of my very favourite shots from LOTR. You know the one where Frodo kisses Sam's forehead? I just love that scene so much, and I have a print of that picture hanging by my bed. Now, the thing is when I asked the actors to sign it they either said with a grin "You know that's not me on the photo?" or "Aaaw that's so sad!" (particularly Lori and Sarah) or "Oh, Sam you crybaby, harden up!" (Bruce Hopkins). That was fun :-) We'd brought Lori some gummibears which she seemed to like :-) And when we were at Jed's table I told him I loved his impression of Pippin at the Fellowship Festival so much - on which account he immediately put on that accent and voice again and talked to me like Pippin. You wouldn't believe how good he is at that, it's awesome.
I was one of the lunatics who paid loads of money for getting an autograph from Sean and Miranda. They were really expensive and I'd argued with myself whether or not to get them for days. Miranda I just found so lovely I really wanted her autograph. And Sean's just been in my heart ever since I saw The Goonies. Actually when I saw the very first promotion shot of the hobbits in a magazine in 2000 my first reaction was "MIKEY!". So I argued with myself. Loads of people weren't getting those autographs because they were expensive. Why should I? Then I realised that I'd bought nothing on the con yet. I'd only spent money on food, and those other people probably bought CDs and merchandise and other fancy stuff. So I just went for it. I'm happy I did. It's a lot of money but...I'll be able to work one more day than I thought so that's the money.
Anyway, Sean was... aaaw. Last year at the FF I'd bought a mounted picture of Sam that I just had to have. It's from Moria when Sam realises Frodo's not dead - that has always been one of my favourite Sam moments so I had to have it - and this was the perfect opportunity to have it signed :-p So Sean looked at it and said "Oh, Frodo's dead!" "He's not dead!" I replied. Then he rose his finger and said "Yes, but we think he's dead!" That was so cute :-) Then I told him I loved that scene. I'm a stupid little fangirl like that. And for the rest of the day I was walking around saying that I had an autograph from Mikey now. I can't help it, he'll always be Mikey to me :-) Actually in his panel someone asked him what his favourite scene of The Goonies is and he said "The one on the porch!" which made me smile cause it's my fave one, too :-)
I then went on to get an autograph from Miranda. Again I thought she was lovely, I don't care what people say.
We were among the last ones to get our signature so it didn't take long until Mark's and Craig's second panel started. We were a bit late and only just caught the crowd singing Happy Birthday to Craig - anyone know how old he turned? Panel. Was. Fun. 'nuff said. Especially when Craig for some reason had a dying scene again and Mark said "This is familiar!" and my brother started chanting "He's not dead" and the audience joined in :-)
Sarah had another panel, too. Was lovely. I wish she was in more movies.
Sean's second panel was a bit like the first one - he just rambles a lot :-)

But this time I got up to the microphone as well, thus beating my own Con record by asking three actors something, and asked him whether - since he'd stated he had been eager to direct an episode of Angel - there are any other tv shows out there he'd love to do some directing for? He replied he'd loved to have done directing for West Wing, and he'd also like to direct for Six Feet Under (is that one still running?) but said he didn't think he was nearly good enough as the guy who does it. And he'd like to do some CSI stuff but basically everything they let him do. Aaaw. :-) Someone asked him about his favourite Sam lines so he started reciting the speech from Mount Doom in his Sam voice and the part about "He's a villain, Mr Frodo!" which almost made me cry - I have so, so much love for Sam. He's been my fave character from the start. He'll always be. He's the heart and soul of the whole story.
Miranda had another panel, too, which was pretty cool. Only I can't really remember a single question :-) Maybe tomorrow.
We skipped the Closing Ceremony to be home early and basically, after a 3 hour drive, that's when I started typing up the stuff here. :-)
It was much fun, I hope I can afford it again next year. We'll see.
Over the past year, I hadn't really watched LOTR. Though I still loved it, I wasn't as into it as I used to be. Even at the Con I wasn't really getting the vibe. Sure, I was enjoying myself but I didn't feel the urge to dress up or buy merchandise and stuff.
Then, on the way home we listened to the LOTR soundtrack and when Into The West came on I just burst into tears. That song always, always gets me. The lyrics are so beautiful, the atmopshere, the wistfulness, the singing - it took me right back to Middle-earth. I need to read the books again. Yes. Definitely.
Okay children, that's it. Good night.
(Mistakes will be corrected tomorrow. Am too tired for spellcheck now.)
Okay, here we go.

By the wy, I dunno what it was but I watched something the other day which was FULL of these allusions and hints to The Scarlet Pimpernel - made me think of you :-)

Pimpernelsie? Aww... strange coincidence, that. Just watched it meself this weekend. I suddenly realised I had Percy-withdrawals! ;o)
no subject
Man, what was it... I was watching it with my brother and kept saying "Ah, Scarlet Pimpernel, you know according to legend/book..."... *scratches head* I can't remember it! Darn!
Oh by the way, at RingCon there was this sort of medieval market and I spotted the soundtrack for that Czech Cinderella movie you like so much there :-)
Percy Withdrawal? aaaw! :-)

I spotted the soundtrack for that Czech Cinderella movie you like so much there :-)
Reeeeaaally? You were gonna sit down and watch it this Christmas, right?
And I was gonna check if Ivanhoe was still airing, wasn´t that the work delegation we agreed on?
Percy Withdrawal? aaaw!
Hee, indeed. After beeing too occupied with Steerforth and Ltd. Ash and Ivy for weeks, SUDDENLY she realises she misses Percy.
...but I assume you can sympathise. ;o)

And I was gonna check if Ivanhoe was still airing, wasn´t that the work delegation we agreed on?
I think it was. And I hope I can catch Cinderella this year - you have to remind me :-)
I can sympathise very much, my dear. And oh Lordy, for some reason I had Percy's poem stuck in my head all day.

I´ll try. Remind me to remind you.
You know what, seems like EVERYONE is on a Percy-revival these days! Very strange indeed... that demmned, elusive... ;o)
