I don`t think Dean had any real interest in school whatsoever. So yes, Sam is smart and brought in the grades. Though I gotta say, the US highschool system? Uhm, not exactly the most challenging thing in the world. ;)
But still - I didn't see him making an EMF meter of an old walkman.
