It depends an awful lot on what I'm writing to be honest. Sometimes I'll open Word and just write it down, usually when I can think of a good opening scene with a basic outline in my head. I'll start and let it flow.
However, at the moment I am writing a big series that currently has more than 27,000 words, I think and I made brief outlines for each part and wrote some parts with middle parts still missing.
One thing they all have is common is that I write down drafts. With that I mean that when I'm writing, I'll write it down as it flows that means with icky grammar, spelling mistakes and random German words in the middle of the sentence because I can't be bothered to look them up, all marked in yellow.
