Question To The (Fanfic) - Writers...
I've got this plotbunny in my head that I'm really tempted to write - only so far the outline of the plot is more than a little rough, and I haven't yet decided on one or two major things. So here's a question I have for you:

When do you start writing? Do you just - have a basic idea and let it flow and surprise you where it leads you? Or do you plan out most of it before you even write down a single word? Do you plan out chapters before you begin a fic? How much detail do you know before you start writing?

I like to plan out most of the plot before I start writing to make sure there aren't any major plotholes. Also if I just start to write I tend to get lost in the middle of the story and don't know where to take it. But now I'm really tempted, as I said...

How about you?

Well.......it all completely depends. Some stories I literally write straight from scratch. I just open up word and start typing and it just flows, really ewasily.

Othes, like my Fleet AU or my SPN book fic are planned and I have sorted out what will happen in each chapter. That said, I still randomly write extracts from bits and pieces all over the story, when they come to me.

I find that with most of my stories, I actually plan them at night, just before falling asleep. This may seem weird, but what I do is go through all the events of the story in my head and memorise them, and then the next day I'll start to write it.

I could go on and on about this but I won't. I love talking about writing :)

It's fun, isn't it? I find it helps me to fall asleep quicker as well :)

Well, where do I start then? :p

Guess who bought season 2 of Dark Angel on DVD today?

It's too hot, and I can't be bothered to write in English now...

I'm generally of the "write it and see where it leads" group, but there are exceptions - Very Good, Boyd is a notable one, where I worked it all out when I was two chapters in, then wrote to the outline.

How much detail do you know before you start writing?

I know how it ends. That's all I need. That and the first line.

Also with multi-chapter fic?

It varies. Usually I start with characters, get them talking or otherwise interacting and see what develops. Sometimes a scene pops into my head and that's the start. Usually after I've been writing for a while the scenes I've written start to suggest a structure and a plot...that's the tricky bit, because then I have to try to guide the story the way it wants to go.

When I plan a story completely before writing it almost never gets beyond the plan. I have a bunch of those...

That's an interesting approach - I've never heard anyone starting a story like that, going from the characters, except for Aryana perhaps - I don't think I could do that so I'm very amazed you can :-)

It depends an awful lot on what I'm writing to be honest. Sometimes I'll open Word and just write it down, usually when I can think of a good opening scene with a basic outline in my head. I'll start and let it flow.

However, at the moment I am writing a big series that currently has more than 27,000 words, I think and I made brief outlines for each part and wrote some parts with middle parts still missing.

One thing they all have is common is that I write down drafts. With that I mean that when I'm writing, I'll write it down as it flows that means with icky grammar, spelling mistakes and random German words in the middle of the sentence because I can't be bothered to look them up, all marked in yellow.

Wow, 27,000 words? That's a lot...I'm currently at, dunno, I think 20,000 words with my German fic :-)

I never do that but I really think I should - I'm one of those people who think they hve to get it perfect the first time around *headdesk*

Yeah, my latest (not quite updated - made a few changes recenty) word count is *goes to look* Oh! It's 29,639. I wrote most of it on a weekend when I had a real good go. I want to have the series finished before I start posting it. Your German fic is a SN fic? :)

You could also write in different colours or anything, just to make you realise that it's not perfect at a certain point. I find it pretty frustrating if you spend ages looking for a certain word or phrasing, because if I knew it, I'd write it down. ;) It has killed muses in the past when I tried hard to find the fitting word. Sometimes I'll write in author's notes too, like "make Dean do this or Sam does that" and will write it in more detail when it feels right.

Yeah, depends. I like to know the 'theme' - the point of the story, whether it be to resolve the issues in asylum (Haunted), to whump Dean with a plausible story behind it (Choices) or to showcase the differences b/w the boys (Lessons) and then I work out vague plots, usually one or two of the twists, then just start writing and see what happens. Though, if the plot's as complicated as 'Lessons', I'd suggest writing and rewriting and editing before posting, lol.

it's been a while since i've written fiction of any kind, but i when i did i usually had the basic outline in my head before i started. sometimes i just had one idea to go with and the whole thing was a surprise, but other times i knew exactly what would happen at the start, middle and end.

if you get stuck in the middle perhaps you could try writing your ending first, that way you know where you're headed?

Yeah but usually my story develops a good deal while I'm still writing so then the end might not fit anymore lol

I am a compulsive planner and list maker. Seriously. Everything point for every one of my fics is numbered/bullet pointed and categorized by chapter. I have no problem adding things - but I need LOTS of structure, otherwise I get lost. Doing it that way also enables me to skip around if I have a block on one particular part.

I think that's great - I wish I could do that. I usually always have a basic outline and then planned out three chapters in advance with certain key scenes that need to be included - which is why I can't just write scenes from the end first, they'd never fit! *lol*

I always admire organised people who think of EVERYTHING before they even start writing...^^

Ah well, as a lot of the people here said before, it depends. But usually, most of the time, it starts with a random plot idea and a beginning. Usually I write that one down. Then, depending on how long I think that story will become, I either finish it off or write some kind of outline. The latter happens either when I get stuck or when I feel "okay, I might need a few more pages to tell what I want to tell, so I better have a plan of what that actually is."

Also, I do a lot of drafts.

But then, I've never progressed beyond ficlets. I cannot (yet) do multi-chapter stories, don't ask why. I've come to call it "the Conan Doyle Syndrome", because his novels are teh suck (IMHO), but the Holmes short stories totally rock.

Good luck with the plotbunny! Find yourself some shade so your brain doesn't melt or disintegrate :)
best wishes!

Hehe I think I'm actually more of a ficlet writer, though I do write the occasional multi chapter fic, when inspiration strikes me :-)

Thank you!

Also, da ich mich sowieso immer mehrmals umentscheide, alles ändere, umstelle und verbessere, hätte es gar keinen großen Sinn, alles vorher auszuplanen. Ich fange einfach an und sehe dann, wo ich lande. Die besten Ideen kommen in der Regel sowieso, wenn man mittendrin ist. Und Löcher in der Handlung werden dann beim Überarbeiten entfernt.^^;
