Linguists! Help!
I'm fairly sure some people on my flist are linguists, and I NEED your help.

I'm supposed to do a GERMAN phonetic transcription for homework using fonts for the computer. That's right, no hand-written transcription allowed. So I FINALLY got a phonetic symbols font to work but it appears some important fonts are missing - like the "schwa" and also the symbol for the German "ä" sound. Brilliant. I've tried several fonts but ...

Does anyone know a good complete font with the phonetic symbols I need to make a GERMAN transcription? Help! I'm at my wit's end and I need to hand it in tomorrow.

Thank you!

Is this any help? http://ipa.typeit.org/ I know that the schwa is on there....as for the ä sound....um, hang on.
Is that a monophthong or a diphthong? I'm not good with German, but the was I think ä is pronounced equals /ɛə/....oh bollocks, it won;t let me display that symbol!

I'm not being any help at all, am I? Besides, is the IPA universal??

On the site I've linked, see the 4th and 9th symbol on the bottom line? The two put together make the vowel sound heard in the English 'bear'. Is that the equivilant to ä?

The 9th symbol would be the German "ä" sound I think...and yup, "bear" is pretty much pronounced the same as in German. THANKS!

With that 9th symbol, in the UK it's the equivilant to the vowel in 'bed'. So, is "ä" more like "air" or the 'e' in "bed"? Just curious :) I always get confused!

More like in "air" I think... the problem is where I live, we pronounce "e"s and "ä"s the same and it's really hard for me to tell the difference :p

Ah I see :)

Of course, these reference I've been making are all with RP as well

Argh, I pity you - IPAs are NOT easy!

Don't I know it! That's the one thing in my studies I'm truly horrible at...IPAs and phonetic transcriptions. Ijust don't HEAR it you know? I was really sure I'd fail my intermediate exam in English because of that...

I really enjoy writing them, and have a photographic memory so can write them quite well and quickly, but trying to hear the sound I find very tricky at times. Some of the sounds are SO similar as well!

That's precisely my thought :o)

By the way and very random - I told my friend Lena how much I loved "Under Ice" and she asked whether she might read itas well? I promise she's very nice and she'll love it as well but I understand if you're not happy with the thought because you still regard the fic as being unfinished?

Well......yes, she may, but could I send you over the completed version first? It's very veyr VERY nearly done now :D

And I'm flattered...very flattered! :)

Yes sure! I'm sure she's willing to wait one more day :o9 I'm excited to read the completed version :o)

(Well the compliment is well deserved :o) )

I have literally half a sentence to do! :D I just need to tweak it slightly and then I think it is done

I may need to reread it again tomorrow but once that sentence isdone I should be happy to send it over if you like :)

That's why I keep writing short ones!

Oh I know! I should be off to bed actually but - what about a 10 minute meet-up to exchange fic? I've written a bit more of my college fi, too :o)

It should work in word no problem - at least it's never been any worry for me. I used it when I was doing phonetic transcriptions for my English coursework :)

At university I know that the linguist people were using Corel's WordPerfect because it apparently was much easier for using phonetic symbols in texts.
I never liked it for more general reasons.

Hmmm...is it like MS word or just fonts?

[identity profile] nelladarren.livejournal.com on May 31st, 2006 06:07 pm (UTC)
It's a program like MSWord - only different company. It's also rather similar - but you can do more with clicking ON things rather than access things via the menu bar.
And that's what makes me nervous. Other people like it.

But it's much easier to use phonetic symbols because you kinda don't have to go to the "Sonderzeichen" thingy every time you use one. I can't remember exactly anymore because I ran WordPerfect on my old computer but never installed it on the later computers anymore.

I don't have a clue if you could just take the WP phonetic symbol font and use it with MSWord - probably not, though... :o)

Well - it's as if you buy washing powder - either you take Persil or Ariel; actually there's not much difference but some people prefer one to the other - I guess with that comparison linux users wash with Frosch... :o)

Where did you get the font? and if somebody knows one with all the sounds I want it to *lol*

The girl who's tutoring the Synchronics Course doesn't have one and she always uses weird symbols that could somehow look like the real symbol *lol* Maybe I could earn some bonus points *hehe*

I'm totally in love with "schwa" :X
