Not necessarily. Maybe he'd die for him because he's his brother but not because he's also his friend and he respects him.

Mmm.. actually I think they *do* respect each other. It's just probably on a subconscious level. Okay, maybe that's me because I think they compliment each other (otherwise I wouldn't slash them), but they *work*. They work *together*. Actually a lot better than "Asylum" seems to imply... because looking through the eps, I was kinda surprised to see that they want to tell us that Dean acts as Sam's boss. Because he doesn't. And I don't even really get why Sam would feel that way. (But then I generally have problems with the fact that he pulled *that* trigger. I haven't decided yet if it's just bad writing - or Sam is really *extremely* fucked up.)

I think they've spent so much time apart they hardly know each other anymore, thus they don't talk. And yes, even if Sam's only been to college for two years, you can be with somebody all the time and grow apart.

Yes and no. Yes, they've led different lives - but they also have shared a whole life before - and do so again. The thing that stands between them is their different POV - and that has been there *long* before - crashing down on them the moment Sam left.
But you see, the problem is, that with Jess dying, Sam "became" his father - and all his bitching about Daddy and their way of life makes him a kind of an hypocrite. (I've read a good story that probably explains this a lot better than I do.) In some strange way Sam still has to grow up and face the facts. And once he does, all the problems will evaporate.
(am I still on topic? *g* oh well, who cares.)

And of course Dean cares, but I'm not sure whether he wants to admit it. Or whether Sam wants to see it.

Yeah, it's more Sam not wanting to see it. I mean, Dean is like an open book *g* (And Sam is very hard to read.)

But it still could be something his father's done, maybe he was cursed or something?

Yes, or maybe Mary was cursed.
There are also a lot of stories popping up, telling us that the "missing link" is Sam's love. (Which means will Dean end up at the ceiling once they have sex ; )

What I'd really love to see is Dean hunting with his father. I *really* want to know how Dean acts around him.

That would be interesting if Dean and Daddy had different opinions... (otherwise, I guess Dean would really just follow his Dad around.)
