In BrEnglish braces can mean either the things on teeth or the ones to hold up trousers (things to hold up traffic are different), and suspenders are underwear used to hold up stockings.

In AmEnglish 'braces' are on teeth and suspenders hold up pants (which we call trousers).

A young American man going into a British Gentleman's Tailor and asking for vest (meaning a waistcoat), pants, and suspenders, was looked at very oddly. But then that was in the 60s, these days it's probably quite normal and they just think they were appearing in Rocky Horror.
